Web Tension Calculator

Set safe web tension for thin polymer films and aluminium foil from substrate tensile strength, cross-section, and a chosen safety factor.

Computes cross-section area from thickness × width, multiplies by substrate tensile strength to get max force at break (PET 170, PC 65, PMMA 70, TAC 110, cellulose 80, aluminium foil 100 MPa), then applies a safety factor (default 0.25) to give a recommended total tension in N and a tension-per-unit-width in N/m suitable for entry into a line PLC. Caveats cover MD/TD anisotropy, edge-defect stress concentration, and temperature/humidity derating.
